These divisions are typically internal to an individual College, rather than totally separate organizations. Analogously, being taught by each respective school within a College, the three major computing majors are Information Systems, Computer Science, and Computer Engineering. Computer Science is relatively standard, but if one is interested in taking one of the other two majors, it would be important to check to see if the college offers the major before enrolling in it.

IS = Business Degree
CS = Science Degree
CE = Engineering Degree

Information Systems can also be known as "Computer Information Systems" or "Management Information Systems." In this major, the key is that a graduate will not only understand how software and hardware work, but also why they are being used from a business perspective. One who graduates with such a degree is not only a programmer who can design an application from start to finish but simultaneously an analyst. This degree is very intensive with general business courses in addition to computation courses. While Application Development is a part of this degree, knowledge of Network Technology and Database Systems is also central. There is a tendency to think that this degree is "easier" but many programmers in business environments without this degree find themselves having difficulty in understanding what they are programming for. Synthesizing the concepts of business and computing into project management is not an easy task!

Computer Science is a degree that focuses largely on software development and having the skill to engage in giant projects. A student who graduates with a computer science degree will not only be a programmer, but one who designs the most efficient code and knows exactly what he/she is doing as he/she programs. In other words, any decent programmer can get from "point a" to "point b" in designing a program, but a Comp Sci major will understand more details about how to do it the best way. In large development projects, such as video games and operating systems, this is very important. The degree is also mathematically intensive (geometry, calculus, etc.) which may help with designing video game software and engineering software.

Computer Engineering is a degree that focuses largely on hardware development. A person who graduates with a Computer Engineering degree will understand what is happening underneath the hood of a computer to the point of being capable of involving himself/herself in projects centered around designing central processing units, video cards, monitors, and other types of new hardware. This degree is mathematically intensive as well. Well the Computer Engineer will not be as skilled in software development methodologies as the Computer Scientist, this person will still be able to program an application from start to finish.

A Message To Shallow Employers who play the "Experience" Card

In the paragraphs and sentences below, I will explain in a nutshell the truth about the "not enough experience" argument, why it is so vague and inarticulate, and why it happens. It has nothing to do with the ability to the job. It is pure age discrimination. In the race for President, nobody cares about "experience" as the younger candidate was able to secure enough votes to win, but the young guy doesn't get a shot in the IT industry as it increases in age. What a mistake! In a country that makes all kinds of laws against race discrimination, sex discrimination, older age discrimination, and all other kinds of discrimination, it makes no sense to allow young workers who are perfectly capable of doing a job to be dismissed solely because of their lack of experience which is euphemism for age discrimination. But hey, keep hiring from India and China while you ignore your up and coming native workers who put their heart and soul into their education, only to outsource their entry level jobs and hold open positions for your own age demographic and cronies.

Unfortunately, this is becoming a big problem as the industry ships jobs overseas and then refuses to hire young people. If you refuse to open the door to new entrants who educate themselves, then you have no right to blame the younger workforce for not getting experience. You, as an employer, cannot expect someone else to develop your workers for you...you've got to contribute! If you refuse to hire entry level workers but expect there to be senior level workers in 20 years, I've got news for you, if nobody waters the seed, it isn't going to grow. Older workers are fearing competition from younger workers so they refuse to hire entry level and instead hire other older workers, creating an "us vs. them" mentality. The IT industry is unfriendly to new entrants, and blows off their qualifications and abilities using a self-fulfilling prophecy of "experience" as a justification. It has gotten to the point where even tech support and help desk jobs demand "experience." Could this be any vaguer? I have seen people with much experience who learned nothing in their experiences. Why is this an advantage? Let's face it, 10 years ago the IT field was wide opened. But now the channel is clogged by older workers. These workers know they aren't better qualified than the younger workers, so they create a criteria to hold their positions that is vague and has nothing to do with the ability to do the job..."experience." That is a cop out. That's an excuse to eliminate competition, via conspiracy, competition that deserves a chance just as much as you do.

Anyone who reads this blog entry and still doesn't think this is a problem really has to be living under a rock. And if you are a younger worker or an older worker who remembers that he/she was once young, then let's do something to improve the situation. Speak out when you hear age discrimination in favor of older workers. Yes, speak out when an employer makes a general claim about "experience" but fails to articulate the details of how it is relevant to the job.

Writing Database Triggers

First determine what type. The studies were not conducted with any preconceived prejudices, in that they did not have a particular vision of what the answers would be. The people who conducted the study simply applied the scientific method to the statistics and observed the evidence, and based off of that, conclusions were made.

Collins himself was shocked by the results. To quote page five, "Our five-year quest yielded many insights, a number of them surprising and quite contrary to conventional wisdom, but one giant conclusion stands above the others: We believe that almost any organization can substantially improve its stature and preface, perhaps become great, if it conscientiously applies the framework of ideas we uncovered." The information revealed was interesting, and Jim Collins became the author of Good to Great when he decided to analyze these studies in a self-help book designed for people who are looking to improve their business performance. It is very applied because business is supposed to be about application, not theory, and very useful. Collins did not write this book to show off his cognitive abilities, but to provide a beneficial experience to the reader."

- Daryl Basarab

I was surprised to stumble upon this today.

Association For Computing Machinery : President-elect Will Make Broadband Part of Economic Recovery

http://usacm.acm.org/usacm/weblog/index.php?p=662

In his most recent weekly address, President-elect Barack Obama outlined portions of his economic recovery plan. The address covered a few areas in which President-elect Obama intends to invest significant funds in order to stimulate the economy. Most of these investments are in infrastructure, which includes broadband. Deploring the typically poor standing the United States has in global measurements of broadband use and deployment, the President-elect indicated that he wanted to connect schools, libraries and hospitals to the internet, The inclusion of hospitals implies that health information technology will need to be addressed should this economic plan be approved by Congress. Reaction to the inclusion of broadband in the economic recovery plan was well received by stakeholders in this area. Of course, these short weekly addresses don’t get into great detail, but the mention of broadband is encouraging. You can read and/or watch the address from the link embedding above.

This may be good news for those who are looking for Information Technology jobs!

Typical IT Roles

The Systems Analyst designs the Information System from a hardware perspective. Without this person, there would be no Information System to begin with.

The Database Administrator controls the organization's Database and is not only tweaking the permissions and settings but also quickly accessing and creating deep archives of data in the SQL language. This is useful to an organization because the core competencies of business (Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Operations, Strategy) rely on the storage of data.

The Network Administrator controls the Server, backs up data, sets different settings, and troubleshoots. This is useful because strong communication, even between distant servers, is a key to proper business operations.

The Help Desk Support Tech fixes people's problems. This is key because the workers must understand the hardware to use it effectively.

The Programmer/Analyst designs applications in the context of a greater Information System. He/she is differentiated from the more Computer Science oriented Software Engineer in that the programs are usually short business projects rather than long independent projects. His/Her main goal is to speed up efficiency. For example, it is easier to use a computer to do Accounting and Financial calculations than it is to use paper and a calculator. A program could be written to do it, when given the numbers to produce the results.

The Web Developer designs the website. The business purpose is Marketing.

Hello World

To start the unrepentantly informal and casual atmosphere that this "self-centered" blog will have, I'll open up by simply saying "hello world."
